THE PROPERTIES OF A WOMAN IN HER HUSBAND'S HOUSE. The first property of a woman in her husband's house is the ụsụekwu, (kitchen). The next is the ọbụbọ, (garden). The next is the ọba - (yam barn). All these are the ones given to her by her husband immediately she is married into the family. She may have other properties that she may have acquired while living with her husband which may be through her industrious prowess or gifts from her friends, relations etc. Onye nwe ọkụkọ nwe akwa o yiri! (He who owns the hen owns the eggs it lays). All these properties by implication belong to her husband, but in a polygamous family, when sharing these properties, her children will be considered first. SHARING THE PROPERTIES OF A WOMAN: The ụsụekwu belongs to her last son. The ọbụbọ belongs to the first wife of her children, that is, any of the children who marries first, the ọbụbọ belongs to that wife that first became a member of the family before the other wives started coming in because women seniority is based on who is married first. The ọba belongs to the first son of her husband, this is because if her husband dies when she is still young the husband's first son takes her over (kushie ya), and secondly because the ọba normally is situated within the main compound of the man which forms part of ishi obi, (however, the inheritance of ọba does not include the yams there in) her children will carry their mother's yams when they are relocating to their individual houses.
