Igbo culture encompasses all the above and its customs and traditions includes visual art, religious beliefs, birth, marriage and death rituals, use of language, music and dance forms, as well as fashion, food and language. Igbo culture demonstrates and modifies the thoughts, speech, and actions of Ndigbo to achieve greatness in life. Igbo culture encourages and promotes intelligence, brotherhood, enterprise, family unit, and fear of God. Little wonder, Igbo’s are friendly and adaptive, sensitive and optimistic, hard work and enterprising, innovative and intelligent, indomitable and competitive, fearless and bold, open minded but not cowards. Igbo’s are uniquely special and distinguished by #Igboness (traits) and have continued to achieve great success in different fields of human endeavours.
However, two of the great traits of Ndigbo appeared to have been eroded recently by outside influence. These are brotherhood and fear of God. It is imperative for the total restoration of the Igbo greatness and even for greater achievement, that Ndigbo re-imbibe the spirit of “onye aghala nwanne ya” and “egwu chukwu” in line with “common sense” Igbo cultural values which guaranteed the success of our fathers. Igbo’s all over the world should ensure that Igbo culture and values are passed on their children with a mandate to do the same. God bless Ndigbo now and always.
